Dr Philip MwasheChess in Kenya made a major milestone when the Chess in Schools Programme was launched on 7 March 2011. This has been a result of committed work by Dr. Mwashe for the past three years.

Dr. Mwashe has carried out demonstrations of the game, using various methods, including use of projectors and videos. He is also involved in the chess training of children.

The ceremony was held at Nyali Primary school. It was refreshing to see expectation on the faces of young children eager to take up the game. This falls into place with the Strategic plan of Chess Kenya, a 15 year programme, launched in 2010, with specific targets to develop Chess in Kenya.

Chess Kenya Chairman, Eng. Andolo Ambasi, contributed 5 chess sets to the school. He also promised clocks in the course of the year for the Coast Branch, set to host the Mombasa Open (13-16 October). This will be an international event and also a rating tournament.
