Irish Primary Schools Girls League Finals 2011

irisht

There are 2 Nationwide Schools chess leagues running in Ireland; CheckMate and ChessZ. Both are run for Primary schools and Secondary schools - 4 in total.

CheckMate was started in 1998, and ChessZ (mine) in c2005. Both were run as private enterprises and in competition with each other.

Two years ago the CheckMate organisers decided to stop running theirs, John Alfred makes they run both now.

Last Year 330 teams took part, and this year 270. (down because of the recession and budget cuts in schools) (Report by John Alfred)

ChessZ differs from CheckMate in that 4 sub-leagues are on offer...Champions, Novices, Girls-Only, and u10s (u10s in main cities only). Novices and u10's leagues do not go to Irish Finals, only Champions and Girls-Only do.

There is only one league left to complete this season, and that is the CheckMate finals for Primary Schools on 23-May.

Other reports written todate for this season can be found on the ICU site at....

ChessZ 2011

The ChessZ Girls-only League Finals were played in Limerick on Tuesday 10-May2011 at the Carlton Hotel in Castletroy.

Local leagues had been running around Ireland and winners turned up for the Finals. The tournament format was a swiss tournament with team scores comprised of the sum of each team members individual scores. Clocks were used on all games with a fast-rapidplay time of 15 minutes.

Six teams and one individual participated giving a total of 25 girls.

Scoil-Ide from Corbally in Limerick city took the lead early on and maintained it right to the end. In fact going into the 6th and last round, they had a 4.5 point lead and could be not be caught. The same team came 5th last year and had the same team members this time.

Last years Girls Winners, Templemary NS, from Killala Co Mayo came 2nd with St Mary's from Carrigaline Co Cork, 3rd.

Nora MacNamee took  the Irish Primary Schoolgirls Title by winning all her 6 games. Second place went to last years Girls Champion, Diana Mirza (and this years Irish u12 Girls Champion). Shauna Burke took 3rd place losing only one game and that was to Diana Mirza.
