Chess in prisons in Mallorca & Menorca

balearsWe have an interesting article (in Spanish) by Guillem Simo & Pep Suarez about the chess programme that began in 2008 and continues today.

The rapid tournament mentioned in the article, which was held in the Centro Penitenciario de Menorca, pitted four unrated inmates against four rated players from the federation. It was won by one of those unrated inmates!

The main aspect of the programme is to use chess as a tool to develop reflection and better to take decisions in critical moments.

Such programmes, like all uses of chess for educational purposes, came under FIDE's Chess in Schools Commission but since 2014 prison programmes are mostly developed by FIDE's Social Projects Commission.
