Conference in Satka, Russia
Friday, 23 September 2011 16:48

The latest in a series of international scientific chess conferences was held in Russia last month.  Current problems of teaching chess in schools and kindergartens in Russia and other countries around the world took place in Satka, Cheliabinsk region, 15-18 August 2011.

The conference was attended by more than 30 teachers from Russia, Germany, Turkey, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Similar conferences were organised in Tomsk (2008), Elista (2008, 2009), Moscow (2009) and Khanty-Mansiysk (2010).

The resolution (in Russian below – it will shortly be translated into English) expresses gratitude to the FIDE President for his support and the Chess in Schools Commission for this web site.

If you can follow some Russian (or are prepared to accept the vagaries of Google Translate), we strongly recommend looking at the web site of Igor G Sukhin (link is in the resolution).

Our thanks to Prof. Charles Moura Netto for this inspirational video from Brazil - Chess that Brings Freedom - about a project for chess in prisons. Not strictly Chess in Schools, but the educational and social benefits of chess, which have been demonstrated in the schools programmes, are especially applicable to the prison population. Chess in Schools has previously mentioned work in prisons in Almeria and other parts of Spain.

This video is in Portuguese, but it has sub-titles in English. Running time 2.29mn. Click on "read more" for more information about the programme which covers 22 prisons and 2000+ inmates.

Slovenia moves ahead
Friday, 26 August 2011 16:01
podpora_ministraThe first two projects using the CIS100 module of Chess in Schools start this autumn in Slovakia and Slovenia.

Slovenia moves into the lead with today's official announcement and yesterday's letter of support from the Minister of Education and Sport.

The Minister is clearly aware of the rich chess history of Slovenia, mentioning Milan Vidmar and Bruno Parma.

He is especially appreciative of FIDE's provision of material (2.500 boards and sets and 100 demo boards), because stretched educational budgets mean that he is unable to provide the equipment that he would like to.

The material for Slovenia is being financed by the FIDE President personally.

Teachers are being trained next month and the first 100 chess classrooms will open by the end of October.

Slovenia's Chess in Schools web site is at

The text of the letter follows, so you can get a Google translation to your language if you wish.
