Jeudi, 04 Juillet 2019 11:43
ro2019This conference took place under the patronage of the Council of the European Union at the Constanta Exposition Centre in Mamaia on June 2.

We are grateful to FIDE-EDU member Ion Dobronauteanu of Romania for the following information.

After many months of efforts, the Romanian organizers obtained for the conference the Patronage of the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council Romania held the Presidency for the first half of 2019). This new recognition at European Union level gives a valuable appreciation of all our work. It shows that it is possible to get support from EU institutions for education through chess, our main focus.

FIDE Honorary Vice President, GM Judit Polgar sent a video message: https://youtu.be/qZ78mxs3Qe0

The main goal of the conference, held during the Euopean School Championship, was to show progress in various EU countries following the Written Declaration 50/2011 of the EU Parliament about the introduction of chess in education systems of member states, and to share good practices of European chess federations in implementing chess in schools. The conference was organized in a nice room inside the playing venue and there were 4 speakers on site: Zurab Azmaiparashvili (ECU), Almog Burstein (ISR), Ozgur Solakoglu (TUR) and Vlad Ungureanu (ROU), 2 live interventions + materials by Skype: Alessandro Dominici (ITA) and Jesper Hall (SWE), 2 recorded videos: Judit Polgar (HUN), Tomasz Delega (POL) and one message of Alexander Kostyev (as he had to leave in the meantime for an important meeting in the Russian Chess Federation).

The presentations are available from the Romanian Chess Federation's web site: http://frsah.ro/index.php/2019/06/08/education-through-chess-conference/

All the presentations are worthy of attention. Perhaps of special interest are:

CASTLE and other projects

The FIDE Early Years Skills programme was developed as part of the CASTLE project which was selected as a "success story" by a panel of experts from
the Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European
Commission.

The Romanian presentation has lots of facts and figures about the development of Chess through Education, especially how it is organized:

The Polish presentation also has facts and figures, not least about the training of teachers:
