Chess - A Tool for Education & Health
Lundi, 26 Février 2018 10:54
We are pleased to announce that the English language edition is now available for download: PDF booklet (12.5mb).

This is a completely new successor to Chess in Schools – Our Global Future published in 2012, with a second edition in 2014.

In this new edition, we hope to disseminate throughout the chess community the benefits of chess for education, health, as well as its use in different social and therapeutic areas.

We hope it serves as a letter of introduction, not only for amateurs, instructors and teachers, but also for the entire community that wants to know the work that is being carried out with chess as an educational and socialization tool.

Samedi, 24 Février 2018 13:15
bac1FIDE’s CiS Commission covers not just chess in schools, especially primary schools, but also pre-school (http://eys.fide.com), secondary schools and higher education.

The field of Higher Education gets comparatively little attention, but chess is making real progress in this area.

We think the first to adopt a programme was the Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) in 2011. That has developed into a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree course with first intake in 2017. See our forthcoming feature.

Also in 2017, chess was introduced as an option as part of the Baccalaureat, the French diploma that students take at the end of their secondary education and which opens the way to higher education. If you understand French, then follow the link...

Chess in prisons in Mallorca & Menorca
Jeudi, 22 Février 2018 12:47
balearsWe have an interesting article (in Spanish) by Guillem Simo & Pep Suarez about the chess programme that began in 2008 and continues today.

The rapid tournament mentioned in the article, which was held in the Centro Penitenciario de Menorca, pitted four unrated inmates against four rated players from the federation. It was won by one of those unrated inmates!

The main aspect of the programme is to use chess as a tool to develop reflection and better to take decisions in critical moments.

Such programmes, like all uses of chess for educational purposes, came under FIDE's Chess in Schools Commission but since 2014 prison programmes are mostly developed by FIDE's Social Projects Commission.
