Chess an obligatory subject in Russian schools |
Jeudi, 15 Août 2019 11:00 |
Starting September 1st, all Russian first graders will study chess for at least 33 hours per year. Chess replaces the third period of physical education class, which many parents and teachers felt was excessive in any case.
The Russian Minister of Education, Olga Vasilyeva, said: I am convinced that we should play chess at school. It is difficult to argue against statistics, and at home and abroad, children playing chess have better academic performance on the order of 35-40%. Engagement with the chess helps the children with mental development.

School Instructor seminar Asunción, Paraguay |
Lundi, 08 Juillet 2019 11:23 |
The FIDE School Instructor seminar in Asunción, Paraguay was a huge success.
Following the introduction of a law last year, establishing chess as a pedagogical support activity in schools (http://cis.fide.com/en/chess-news/365-paraguay-new-law-on-chess-in-schools) there was a huge need to train teachers to provide that support.
That is why so many - 49 - attended this seminar (see photo below with the Lecturers front row centre).
EDU member Bernardo Roselli was main Lecturer, assisted by Esteban Jaureguizar whose presentation of Early Years Skills was especially appreciated.

EDU's Asian Continent Coordinator, Atanu Lahiri was recently in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, known as 'Land of Happiness'. He was there to provide basic chess training to 30 School Sports Instructors. This was at the initiative of the All India Chess Federation (because Bhutan does not yet have its own chess federation) and the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of Education of Government of Bhutan.
Some of the instructors had travelled for more than two days in order to attend - the country consists mostly of high mountains and some of the 20 Districts are remote from the capital Thimphu where the workshop was held.

Chess in Education Conference - Tsaghkadzor |
Mardi, 18 Juin 2019 14:03 |
The 2019 Chess in Education conference in Tsaghkadzor, Armenia was an important event.
What was special? Aside from many significant presentations, there were representatives from several Ministries of Education.
Usually, attendees are already involved in the field, but getting the involvement of Ministers, Secretaries and other representatives from national Educational authorities is essential if we are to succeed in our objective of using chess as an educational tool - something to improve educational outcomes, not something dedicated to producing chess players.
You can get a flavour of the conference from the video (7 min.) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNw2nzbKrNQ&t=4s
