CASTLE Project – Final Conference – Turin 26 May

erasmuslogoThe CASTLE project began in 2015 with funding of almost €250,000 from the EU under the Erasmus+ scheme. The initial project now comes to an end with this conference. CASTLE is an acronym for a  Chess curriculum to Advance Students´ Thinking and Learning skills in primary Education.

The project has been run in parallel in three countries: Italy, Germany and Spain. 50 primary school teachers and 900 children have been involved so far. You can read more about the project here and below.

FIDE joined in the project primarily to fund the production and dissemination of almost 50 videos showing how to implement the early years part of the course – chess for very young children on a giant chessboard. More information and the Early Years Skills videos themselves – in Italian but with sub-titles in English (and shortly in German and Spanish as well) – can be found on the dedicated web site

Conferences & Prize Competition

csc logoChess in School conferences have been coming thick and fast, especially in the second half of this year. 

There was the conference in Tsaghkadzor, Armenia (see here and the web site here).

A few weeks later, the 1st ECU Education Chess Conference was held in Batumi, Georgia (article here).

Next up is London (10-12 December) - The Didactics of Chess . There will be over 60 speakers - details here.
The London Conference is partly sponsored by the ECU and again features a prize competition, with €1000 in prizes, for the best original chess exercise involving collaborative problem solving. Entries close soon (December 4) so click on 'read more' for details and act fast!

Morocco - School Instructor seminar, Tanger

frmelogoThe Fédération Royale Marocaine des Echecs is organizing a second FIDE School Instructor seminar (the first was in 2015 in Agadir). The fourth such event in Africa, it will take place in Tanger, 2-5 December. The seminar will be in Arabic & French with GM Slim Bouaziz as Lecturer.

Armenia Chess in Schools Conference

top-bannerInternational Conference entitled “Theoretical and Practical Issues of Chess Education in Schools” was held on the 1st and 2nd of October, at “Russia” hotel in Tsaghkadzor resort city, Armenia. The Conference was organized under the auspices of Chess Academy of Armenia and Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia, cooperating with FIDE, Armenian Chess Federation and Khachatur Abovian Armenian State Pedagogical University. More than 50 representatives from 15 countries (Spain, Hungary, Angola, UAE, Poland, Belarus, Iran, Luxembourg, Russia, Slovakia, Georgia, Uruguay, Belgium, India, and Armenia) took part in the two-day Conference.
The Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia Mr. Levon Mkrtchyan, the Chancellor of Armenian State Pedagogical University, Professor Ruben Mirzakhanyan, the President of European Chess Union Mr. Zurab Azamaiparashvili and the Founder and President of Chess Academy of Armenia, the Vice-President of Chess Federation of Armenia Mr. Smbat Lputian and FIDE CiS Commission Chairman Mr. Kevin O’Connell delivered their welcoming speeches at the opening ceremony. Before proceeding to the speeches, a film about the Armenian experience and success story in the field as well as great on the heritage of Armenian “Chess in Schools” Program was introduced to the audience.
